The instinct when a search drags is to send more. It is the one lever that feels like it is under your control, and every extra application feels like progress. The data says it is the weaker of the two levers you have.
The number that matters

We lead with this study because of its size. Plenty of smaller ones report the same direction at different magnitudes, and you should trust the direction more than any single percentage.

What that does to your week
A typical search runs dozens of applications and more than a working week of typing. Suppose you have twenty hours. At the generic rate, sixty applications buys you roughly one and a half interviews. At the tailored rate, thirty buys you about the same, with half the applications and considerably less of you spent.
That is the real claim. Not that tailoring is magic, but that the same hours produce more interviews when they are aimed, and you have a finite number of hours before this stops being sustainable.

Why aiming works: you get about seven seconds

Here is where we part company with how this statistic is usually sold. Seven seconds is not how long someone reads your resume. It is how long they take to decide whether to keep reading. Almost every tool quoting this number implies the first, because the first is frightening and frightened people buy things.
The difference changes what you should actually do. If it were reading time, the answer would be to cram. Because it is triage, the answer is to make the top of the page obviously the right shape for the job in question, so it survives to a real read.

And the honest version of the ATS story
Applicant tracking software is near-universal at the top of the market and much less common further down. Almost every one of the largest employers screens with it. Barely a third of small ones do.
So no, a robot is not reading every application you send, and any product implying otherwise is selling you fear. What is true is that when you apply to a big employer, your resume has to be machine-readable before a person ever sees it, and the cost of being safe there is close to zero. That is why every export we produce is single-column, plain-text-parseable, and free.

What we will not claim
We will not give you an "ATS score". No tool outside a given employer can know how their system ranks you, and a number invented to look like one is a lie with a progress bar around it.
What we measure instead is honest and boring: whether your resume is structurally sound, whether your bullets carry real outcomes, and how well it lines up against the specific posting in front of you. That last one is the Match Score, and it is deterministic, so the same resume against the same posting always produces the same number.
Which is the whole product
Write one good resume. Then, for each job worth your time, aim a version of it at that posting and send a cover letter that argues from the same evidence. That is the loop the data supports, so that is what we built, and the deterministic parts of it, including the Match Score, are free.
